How to paint a metal door
Contrary to popular belief, it is in fact possible to paint a metal or steel door. Here are some basic steps you should undertake to ensure a good quality finish:
- Remove any glass or glazing, as well as any hardware present on the doors.
- The door will need to be thoroughly cleaned down. It’s important not to paint over debris or dirt.
- Mask up the door with tape as appropriate.
- Fix any dents or scratches. Fill these in and then sand everything down to ensure you paint onto a smooth surface.
- Paint using any colour paint you wish. Ensure you use an oil based or acrylic paint, and spray the paint on for the best results. It’s generally a good idea to apply an oil based primer to the metal first.
If there are any elements that you are not confident on, then it really will pay to consult, and possibly employ a professional to complete the painting for you.
Make the most of your wooden front door
Your front door is one of your home’s most underrated assets. A good looking front door, and particularly wooden front doors can look fantastic, and really make a huge difference to the look of your home’s exterior.
Your front door receives constant wear and tear, from both humans using it, and also from the elements such as rain, wind and even snow. The constant erosion of the underlying material, and any paint that overlays it, means that your front door needs consistent maintenance to keep it in tip-top condition.
At a basic level, your wood front door will need cleaning regularly to remove dirt and grime. Any minor damage like scratches and dents will need repairing, and it will also need re-painting with either a varnish or a coloured paint as applicable. The effort you put into keeping your wooden front door in good condition will pay back several fold on the long run.
